Big Ruby Wrap Up

Comments

I returned from Big Ruby yesterday, and have had a day to recover and reflect on things, so I thought I’d do a quick write-up.

First, I was amazed at how smoothly everything ran, especially for a first-year conference. Mark, Marshall, Glenn, Karthik, Shufen and their volunteers did an amazing job of keeping things moving along on schedule, and making adjustments on the fly. Seeing how well they handled everything was inspiring.

Second, the talks were very high-quality, moreso considering the number of first-timers who spoke. A personal favorite of mine was Jim Weirich’s keynote – he never disappoints, but when you add flying robots to an already solid talk, it goes from good to great. I need to figure out a way to convince my wife it’s necessary for my career advancement that I obtain a flying robot. I also really enjoyed Joe Kutner’s talk, Build a Bigger Brain and Adam Keys’s talk, Move Fast, Make Things.

Third, despite how nervous I was before giving my first ever full-length talk, I ended up really enjoying it, and I think the audience did, too. Confreaks recorded the talks and will be posting them here when available. In the meantime, feel free to take a look at the slides or, if you attended the talk, please rate it on SpeakerRate.
